Our Success Stories in Parts of Northern Uganda

In all the three Sub Counties of Bungatira, Paicho and Lamogi, the community leaders at different levels are openly beginning to discuss issues of HIV/AIDS stigma, discrimination as well as child rights abuse in public forums.

In Lamogi for example, the Sub County Local Council (LC3) has made it a point to always talk and share with other stakeholders through LC III, Parish, Village meetings and other forums issues of SDC.

In Bungatira Sub County, for instance, the community leaders at sub county level organized an operation in Coo-pe camp to find out if children in that camp were going to school. They found out that a number of children were redundant at home. This prompted the leaders to gather all the parents in that camp, talk to them about their children’s rights to education. Together with the parents they agreed that any parent who will not take his/her child to school will work for the sub county; for example, cleaning/slashing for one week or pay a fine of 5,000-10,000 shs. Since then the number of school going children improved. For example in Panyikworo P.7 School only 430 children were attending school before the launched operation by the community leaders but after the exercise, the number increased to 790.

In Paicho Sub County, the community leaders resorted to seeking God’s help by giving testimonies, confessions and prayer requests in churches as a way to combat HIV/AIDS stigma and discrimination as well as child rights abuse. This went a long way in paving the way to sensitise believers on issues of HIV/AIDS and child Rights abuse and as a result some churches like St Thomas Church of Uganda has included it in their time table for bible studies as well as their Sunday school timetable. Parents/Guardians and OVCs get to share knowledge and experiences.
